Code of conduct for Reachers

Registration for Operation Reach takes place during the first parent / carer meeting. At such time, you will be required to sign a Code of Conduct. The purpose of the Code of Conduct is to ensure that everyone who participates in Operation Reach knows what is expected of them and feels safe, respected and valued. We expect Reachers to behave appropriately and respectfully, following this code at all times.

Here is an outline of what is included:

Help broaden young people’s horizons

Behaviour

  1. Reachers are expected to treat everyone with respect, including all fellow Reachers, members of staff, local guides and any member of the public who you communicate with whilst representing Operation Reach, including at all times during the expedition and mentoring sessions.

  2. Reachers are expected to follow instructions given to them by members of staff, local guides or mentors first time. There should never be a reason for any member of staff, local guide or mentor to have to repeat an instruction.

  3. Reachers will not, at any time during the expedition, use, misuse, possess or supply illegal substances, alcohol or potentially harmful substances.

  4. Reachers are expected to take full responsibility for their own behaviour.

Understanding the risks

  1. Reachers are required to attend the Pre-Departure Travel Safety & Security Briefing during the Preparation Day. Reachers should take this opportunity to raise any concerns or seek clarification if any of the information is unclear, only partially understood or not understood at all.

  2. Reachers are provided with a copy of the Risk Assessment for the Expedition prior to departure. Reachers are required to read the Risk Assessment for the Expedition prior to departure and raise any concerns or seek clarification if any of the information is unclear, only partially understood or not understood at all.

  3. Reachers are required to attend the Daily Travel Safety & Security Briefing during the expedition. Reachers should take this opportunity to raise any concerns or seek clarification if any of the information is unclear, only partially understood or not understood at all.

Safeguarding

  1. If any member of staff or mentor becomes concerned that your behaviour suggests that you may be at risk or in need of protection, they will follow our safeguarding procedures. This may involve making a referral to your local authority or reporting a concern to the appropriate support services as required. As far as reasonably practicable, we will talk this through with you and inform you of the steps we are taking, however this may not always be possible or appropriate.

We expect all Reachers to follow the Code of Conduct. If any Reacher behaves in a way which contradicts the Code of Conduct, they may be:

  • Given an opportunity to change their behaviour and reminded to comply with the Code of Conduct for the enjoyment and safety of all participants

  • Have restrictions placed on their participation in aspects of Operation Reach’s programme, or have additional supervision placed on them

  • Be required to discontinue their involvement in the Operation Reach programme, and bear all financial costs relating to the discontinuance of their involvement in the Operation Reach programme.
